Google Analytics Setup: Step by Step Process

Goal: To create a functional Analytics Account which, when paired with Google Tag Manager, tracks events and users correctly and features goals relevant to the client.

Check to see if there is an existing Account and Container for the client. If there is one, skip to step 3. If not:

  • Name this view ‘RAW Data’
  • This view should have no restrictions or filtering – it’s used as a backup

Filter All Website Data

  • Click into the ‘All Web Site Data’ View, then go to ‘Admin.’
  • Under the View, there should be a number of subsections. Select ‘Filters’ and then click the button labeled ‘Add Filter.’

    • In Goal details, leave Category, Action and Value blank. Set label to ‘Regular Expression’ and type ‘tel:’ in the box.
    • If it is not already selected, Use the Event value as the Goal Value for the conversion.
    • If the site is live, Verify the goal to make sure it works, then click the button marked ‘Save.’
      • (If the site is not live, the goal verification will show no conversions.)
  • Adding a goal for clicks to email
    • In Goal setup, select ‘Custom,’ then click the button labelled ‘Continue’
    • In Goal description, name the goal ‘Click to Email’ and select the ‘Event’ Type, then click Continue.
