Image ALT’s
Alt tag or ‘Alt text’ is a contraction of ‘alternative text’. It’s a short written description of an image, which makes sense of that image when it can’t be viewed for some reason. Well-written alt text is important to your website’s accessibility, and its search engine optimization.
How to identify an image ALT’s.
To identify if the image has an alt tag, we will need to use tools such as Screaming Frog, Semrush or Manual Audit.
Note: Always check the pages on the website are in Scope of the client project so that we would know how many pages and what are the pages that need to be optimized. Also, Create a spreadsheet document in the client’s folder using this template.
Screaming Frog
Enter the pages that will be run in the Screaming Frog.
Once done, Highlight the pages. Below, click the Images Details Tab
Click the Export button if there are images.
Note: In this case, since there are no images we can conclude that maybe the website doesn't have any images or images are blocked from crawling. It is important to check the website.
Semrush
Go to Projects or Create a project.
Go to Site Audit and click View Full Report.
Look for images don’t have alt attributes. You may use control+find.
Click the link then export the data.
Manual Audit /Inspect Elements
Open each page according to the pages in Scope.
Hover your mouse over the image, right-click, then click Inspect.
Copy the src= or the source link and paste it in the New Image Alt’s tab.
Adding Image Alts

WordPress
- Navigate to the client’s website backend
- (ie: {client’s site}/wp-admin )
- In their backend, go to the Media Library tab.
- This is where all of the images on the site are stored.
- Click on a picture to edit it’s attributes.
- A pop-up will show up, displaying the image and it’s information, as well as specific attributes including Alternative Text, Title, Copy Link and more.
- We will be focusing on the Alternative Text field for adding image alts.
Shopify
- If you have Yoast SEO open, click on ‘Edit with Shopify’ before clicking on the image you want to add alt attributes to.)
- Open a page and then click on an image to reach the image editor screen.
- Once you’ve done that, you should see an option to ‘Edit alt text’, then it’s just a simple case of adding your alt text in the field provided.
Bento Box
- Login to Bentobox.
- Go to Media Library.
- Look for the image.
- On the sidebar of the image, you will see an option to add an Alt Text.
WIX
To add alt text to your Wix Pro Gallery:
- Click the gallery
- Click Manage Media
- Select an image
- Insert your alt text underneath Title
- Click Done
To add alt text to a single image:
- Click the image
- Click the settings icon
- Enter your alt text under What’s in the image? Tell Google
Squareup
- Go to Online.
- Click Edit Site.
- Go to the Page
- Click on the Image
- Look for “Describe Image” and add your Alt text.
Tip: Use the Keywords spreadsheet to identify a keyword that can be injected into the description of the image.
