Internal Linking

Adding internal links to a website boosts it’s Search Engine Optimization and allows for a better user experience, giving users the ability to go directly to a related page and further explore a website.

What You’ll need:

1. Internal Linking sheet
2. Keyword & SEO Copy

Creating the Internal Linking Opportunities (Setup)

Create a spreadsheet document in the client’s folder.

Open the client’s website in a new tab and begin reading through the content for internal linking opportunities.

Copy the text or keyword that you are looking to add a link for into the spreadsheet under the Keyword column.

Write down what text type it is in the Alt Text column (ie: H1, Paragraph, etc).

Paste the URL for the page this opportunity is on in the Page URL column.

Identify where on the page it is in the Link From (section) column.

  • This helps us find the specific opportunity when it’s time to inject the internal link.

Navigate to the page on which the link opportunity will go to.

  • Copy this page’s URL and add it to the Link To column.

Copy the Link To page’s H1 and paste it into the Page’s H1 column.

Repeat steps 1-9 for each internal link opportunity on every page.

 Injecting the Internal Links

Navigate to the page in which the internal link opportunity has been identified (the Page URL).

  • Edit this page in the WordPress backend or Dreamweaver (via Cyberduck), whichever will allow you to add the link.

Use the Text, Text Type, and Link From (section) columns to locate and identify the opportunity.

Add a tag (link) to the opportunity.

When the internal link has been added, highlight the row in green on the spreadsheet to identify that this opportunity has been added.

Repeat steps 1-4 until all internal links have been added.
